Novena to Our Lady of Guadalupe

Start Date: December, 3
End Date: December, 11
Feast Day: December, 12

Patronage:

Our Lady of Guadalupe is venerated as the patroness of the Americas, the unborn, and the New Evangelization. Through her miraculous apparition to St. Juan Diego in 1531, she revealed herself as a tender Mother who draws nations to the merciful Heart of Jesus. Her image—marked by symbols understood by both Indigenous peoples and Christians—became a bridge of reconciliation, healing, and conversion. Under her patronage, the faithful find protection, unity, and renewed zeal to bring Christ’s love into cultures, families, and society.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer (to be said each day):

Remember, O most gracious Virgin of Guadalupe, that in your heavenly apparitions on the mount of Tepeyac, you promised to show your compassion and pity towards all who, loving and trusting you, seek your help and call upon you in their necessities and afflictions. You promised to hear our supplications, to dry our tears, and to give us consolation and relief.

Never has it been known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly to you, O Mary, ever-Virgin Mother of the true God! Though grieving under the weight of our sins, we come to prostrate ourselves before you. We fully trust that, standing beneath your shadow and protection, nothing will trouble or afflict us, nor do we need to fear illness or misfortune, or any other sorrow.

O Virgin of Guadalupe, you want to remain with us through your admirable Image, you who are our Mother, our health, and our life. Placing ourselves beneath your maternal gaze, and having recourse to you in all our necessities, we need do nothing more.

O Holy Mother of God, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer us. Amen.

DAY ONE – Mother of Compassion and Conversion

Scripture Reading:
“Am I not here, I who am your mother?” (cf. Zech 2:10–11)

Reflection:
On this first day of the novena, we remember Our Lady’s tender assurance to St. Juan Diego on Tepeyac, where she appeared clothed in the light of dawn, radiant with the love of Our Adorable Jesus. Her miraculous image revealed a Mother who stoops toward the lowly, standing upon the moon and wrapped in the sun, yet carrying the humble strength of one who intercedes for her children. She came with compassion, inviting conversion, healing, and trust. As we contemplate her sacred tilma-image, we learn that every anxious heart can find refuge beneath her mantle, where grace begins anew.

Prayer:
Dearest Lady of Guadalupe, fruitful Mother of holiness, teach us your ways of gentleness and strength. Hear our humble prayers, offered with heartfelt confidence, as we beg this favor…

DAY TWO – Mother Who Leads Us Into God’s Holy Will

Scripture Reading:
“Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” (Lk 1:38)

Reflection :
On this second day, we look to Our Lady of Guadalupe as the humble Handmaid who teaches us to embrace God’s will with courage and joy. In her tilma image, her bowed head reveals a heart wholly surrendered to the Father, even as she carries Our Adorable Jesus beneath her heart. Appearing at Tepeyac, she invited a wounded people to return to the God of life, guiding them with maternal patience into faith, reconciliation, and new beginnings. As we stand before her, we ask for the grace to imitate her ready “yes,” trusting that God’s will always leads to peace and holiness.

Prayer:
O Mary, conceived without sin, we come to your throne of grace to share the fervent devotion of your faithful Mexican children who call to you under the glorious Aztec title of Guadalupe. Obtain for us a lively faith to do your Son’s holy will always; may His will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

DAY THREE – Mother of Sorrows, Mother of Courage

Scripture Reading:
“A sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Lk 2:35)

Reflection :
On this third day, we contemplate Our Lady of Guadalupe as the Mother whose Immaculate Heart knows both sorrow and steadfast hope. Though her image on the tilma radiates gentleness and peace, it also reveals a woman prepared to share fully in the sufferings of her Son, Our Adorable Jesus. Her folded hands, lifted in prayer, remind us that she faced every trial in union with God. At Tepeyac, she drew near to a people burdened by grief, showing that no wound is beyond her care. As we walk through our own thorns and crosses, she teaches us to persevere with courage, purity of heart, and unwavering trust.

Prayer:
O Mary, whose Immaculate Heart was pierced by seven swords of grief, help us to walk valiantly amid the sharp thorns strewn across our pathway. Obtain for us the strength to be true imitators of you. This we ask you, our dear Mother.

DAY FOUR – Mother Who Forms Us in Christlike Charity

Scripture Reading:
“Above all, put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Col 3:14)

Reflection:
On this fourth day, we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe as the Mother who teaches us the charity of her divine Son. Her tilma image shows her carrying Our Adorable Jesus to a wounded world, drawing near not with severity but with tenderness, attention, and self-giving love. At Tepeyac, she sought the good of an entire people, lifting them from fear into dignity and hope. Her presence transformed hearts because she carried within her the fire of Christ’s charity. As we seek to imitate her, we ask for a strengthened will that chooses compassion, generosity, and service—even when it costs us.

Prayer:
Dearest Mother of Guadalupe, we beg you for a fortified will to imitate your divine Son’s charity, to always seek the good of others in need. Grant us this, we humbly ask of you.

DAY FIVE – Mother of Mercy and Conversion of Heart

Scripture Reading:
“Return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and merciful.” (Joel 2:13)

Reflection :
On this fifth day, we look to Our Lady of Guadalupe as the Mother of Mercy who brings sinners into the healing embrace of her Son, Our Adorable Jesus. When she appeared on Tepeyac, she did not condemn but called her children back to God with tenderness and hope. Her serene gaze on the tilma speaks of forgiveness freely offered, and her mantle—studded with stars—reminds us that grace is never beyond reach. Before such a Mother, we dare to ask for purification of heart, strength to begin anew, and fidelity in serving Christ. With her, we yearn to praise Him forever in the glory of heaven.

Prayer:
O most holy Mother, we beg you to obtain for us pardon of all our sins, abundant graces to serve your Son more faithfully from now on, and lastly, the grace to praise Him with you forever in heaven.

DAY SIX – Mother of Vocations and Guardian of the Church

Scripture Reading:
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” (Mt 9:37–38)

Reflection :
On this sixth day, we turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe as the Mother who tenderly forms and protects vocations in the heart of the Church. When she appeared on Tepeyac, she came as the one who brings Christ to the world, and through her maternal care countless hearts were moved to faith, service, and missionary zeal. Her image—quiet yet commanding—reminds us that vocations are born where hearts encounter divine love. In her presence, we ask for an outpouring of holy priests and consecrated souls: men and women who become light in darkness, warmth for the weary, and steadfast witnesses of Our Adorable Jesus.

Prayer:
Mary, Mother of vocations, multiply priestly vocations and fill the earth with religious houses which will be light and warmth for the world, safety in stormy nights. Beg your Son to send us many priests and religious. This we ask of you, O Mother.

DAY SEVEN – Mother of Holy Families and Domestic Peace

Scripture Reading:
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Jos 24:15)

Reflection :
On this seventh day, we contemplate Our Lady of Guadalupe as the gentle Mother who strengthens families and restores peace within the home. When she appeared on Tepeyac, she came as a Mother who gathers her children and leads them to the Heart of Our Adorable Jesus. Her image—serene, prayerful, and radiant—teaches families to center their lives on God, to cultivate forgiveness, and to walk together in faith. In a world of distraction and division, she stands as a guiding star, reminding parents of their sacred mission and children of their calling to love, obey, and honor. Under her mantle, every household can become a sanctuary of grace.

Prayer:
O Lady of Guadalupe, we beg you that parents live a holy life and educate their children in a Christian manner; that children obey and follow the directions of their parents; that all members of the family pray and worship together. This we ask of you, O Mother.

DAY EIGHT – Mother of Fidelity and Holy Duty

Scripture Reading:
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” (Col 3:23)

Reflection :
On this eighth day, we look to Our Lady of Guadalupe as the Mother who inspires fidelity and perseverance in daily life, just as she guided St. Juan Diego with patience and trust. When she appeared on Tepeyac, she entrusted Juan Diego with a mission that required courage, obedience, and humble persistence, showing that holiness grows in the faithful fulfillment of small duties. Her tilma image—hands folded in prayer, eyes gentle yet purposeful—reflects this same dedication. Through her maternal intercession, we are strengthened to live faithfully, embracing our responsibilities with joy, patience, and unwavering devotion, just as Juan Diego did in service to God.

Prayer:
With our hearts full of the most sincere veneration, we prostrate ourselves before you, O Mother, to ask you to obtain for us the grace to fulfill the duties of our state in life with faithfulness and constancy.

DAY NINE – Mother of Eternal Joy and Heavenly Intercession

Scripture Reading:
“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose hope is in Him.” (Jer 17:7)

Reflection :
On this ninth day, we celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe as the Mother who leads her children to the fullness of joy in heaven. Just as she appeared to St. Juan Diego, offering comfort, guidance, and her maternal protection, she continues to guide all who turn to her with faith and devotion. Her miraculous tilma image reminds us of God’s tender care and the hope of eternal life. Through her intercession, we are invited to persevere in holiness, rejoice in God’s gifts, and anticipate the happiness of beholding her and her Son face to face in the glory of heaven.

Prayer:
O God, You have been pleased to bestow upon us unceasing favors by having placed us under the special protection of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Grant us, Your humble servants, who rejoice in honoring her today upon earth, the happiness of seeing her face to face in heaven.
