Divine Appeal 271: “I hold in abomination those who are hypocrites and deceitful.”
As a warning against the perils of deception and deceit, our Adorable Jesus calls us to live lives of integrity and truth. He reminds us in today’s gospel that, just as a tree is identified by its fruit, so our words and deeds expose our hearts (Luke 6:43-45). True discipleship necessitates an internal metamorphosis in which our goals, ideas, and actions are in harmony with His divine truth, rather than only outward piety. Because it causes spiritual blindness and makes it impossible for us to perceive ourselves and others with the clarity of His love, the Lord detests lies.
Through His boundless mercy, our Adorable Jesus seeks to cleanse us of the urge to judge others while ignoring our own faults. He calls us to humility, urging us to examine our own hearts before seeking to correct others (Lk 6:42). Our words and deeds show who we really are, as the first reading (Sirach 27:4–7) reminds us. When we are infused with God’s knowledge, love, and grace, we will naturally produce positive results rather than falter. The reason the virtuous prosper, according to the Psalm, is because they are rooted in Him and have a firm and honest faith.
We hold fast to the triumph of Christ, as declared in the Second Reading (1 Corinthians 15:54-58), with steadfast hope. He gives us the strength to live in the truth and conquer sin. Instead of leaving us in our frailties, our Adorable Jesus walks with us and tenderly changes our hearts. In order for our lives to reflect His light, let us answer His divine call by pursuing purity of heart, speaking honestly, and loving without pretense.
Prayer:
Our Adorable Jesus, You walk with us, seeing beyond our words into the depths of our hearts. Remove the blindness that keeps us from true humility. Uproot every trace of hypocrisy and fill us with Your goodness, so that we may bear fruit worthy of Your love. Amen.
