Novena to St. Bernadette Soubirous

Start Date: April 7
End Date: April 15
Feast Day: May 16

Patronage:

Patron saint of the sick, the poor, and those who suffer misunderstanding or ridicule for their faith. She is also associated with shepherds and all who seek humility and purity of heart, especially devotees of Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer (to be said each day):

Dear Saint Bernadette, Chosen by Almighty God as a channel of His Graces and Blessings, and through your humble obedience to the requests of Our Blessed Mother, Mary, you gained for us the Miraculous waters of Spiritual and physical healing.

We implore you to listen to our pleading prayers that we may be healed of our Spiritual and physical imperfections.
Place our petitions in the Hands of our Holy Mother, Mary, so that She may place them at the feet of Her beloved Son, Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, that He may look on us with mercy and compassion: (Make your Petition)

Help, O Dear Saint Bernadette to follow your example, so that irrespective of our own pain and suffering we may always be mindful of the needs of others, especially those whose sufferings are greater than ours.
As we await the Mercy of God, remind us to offer up our pain and suffering for the conversion of sinners, and in reparation for the sins and blasphemies of mankind.

Pray for us Saint Bernadette, that like you, we may always be obedient to the will of Our Heavenly Father, and that through our prayers and humility we may bring consolation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary that have been so grievously wounded by our sins.

AMEN.

Day 1 – Humility in God’s Presence

Scripture Reading
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (cf. Mt 5:3)

Reflection
St. Bernadette lived hidden in poverty, unnoticed by the world, yet chosen by God for a divine encounter. This reveals a profound mystery: God is drawn to littleness. Like the Virgin Mary (cf. Lk 1:48), Bernadette’s humility became the space where heaven touched earth. Our Adorable Jesus seeks not outward greatness but interior openness. In a culture that values visibility and success, humility appears as loss—but in God’s eyes, it is fullness. The “poor in spirit” are those emptied of self-reliance and filled with trust. Bernadette did not strive to elevate herself; she simply remained available to grace. In our daily lives—school, relationships, hidden struggles—we are invited to embrace this same humility. When we stop seeking recognition and begin seeking only God, our lives become fertile ground for grace, where divine love quietly takes root and transforms us from within.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, meek and humble of Heart, we come before You with our desire to be seen, affirmed, and recognized. Gently strip us of all pride that distances us from You and from the truth of who we are in Your sight. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, grant us the grace to love hiddenness and to embrace a life known only to You. Teach us to rejoice when we are unnoticed, if only Your gaze rests upon us with love. When we are tempted to compare ourselves to others, draw us back into the quiet truth that we are held in Your Heart. Let our lives become silent offerings, hidden flames of love burning for Your glory alone. O Jesus, dwell within our littleness and make us vessels of Your grace. May we decrease so that You may increase within us, now and always. Amen.

Day 2 – Trust Amid Suffering

Scripture Reading
“My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” (cf. 2 Cor 12:9)

Reflection
St. Bernadette endured illness, misunderstanding, and physical weakness, yet she remained deeply rooted in trust. Her suffering was not meaningless; it became a participation in the mystery of Christ’s Cross (cf. Col 1:24). Our Adorable Jesus does not promise a life without pain, but a love that transforms suffering from within. Like Job (cf. Job 1–2), Bernadette entrusted herself to God even when clarity was absent. In our own lives, we often resist suffering—whether in academic pressures, emotional struggles, or personal disappointments. Yet suffering, when united to Christ, becomes a hidden offering that bears fruit beyond what we see. Bernadette teaches that trust is not based on understanding, but on love. When we surrender our pain to Jesus, it is no longer wasted, but becomes a channel of grace for ourselves and for others.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, Crucified Love, we bring before You our wounds, our fears, and the burdens we carry within our hearts. You who embraced suffering out of love for us, teach us to accept our crosses with trust and surrender. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, grant us the grace to remain faithful when we do not understand Your ways. When we feel weak, remind us that Your power is made perfect in our weakness. Transform our trials into offerings of love, united to Your Sacred Passion. Help us not to resist suffering, but to place it gently into Your hands. May every difficulty become a silent prayer rising to the Father. O Jesus, we trust in Your hidden work within us, even when we cannot see it. Sustain us with Your grace, and draw us ever closer to Your Heart, where all suffering finds meaning and peace. Amen.

Day 3 – Purity of Heart

Scripture Reading
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (cf. Mt 5:8)

Reflection
The purity of St. Bernadette’s heart allowed her to receive heavenly grace with clarity and simplicity. Purity is not merely external restraint but an interior unity—a heart undivided in its love for God. Our Adorable Jesus desires sincerity more than perfection. In a world filled with distractions, competing desires, and hidden motives, purity becomes a path of freedom. Bernadette did not seek recognition or manipulate her experiences; she remained transparent to grace. Her simplicity allowed her to perceive God’s presence where others could not. We are invited to examine what fills our hearts—ambition, comparison, distraction—and gently surrender these to God. Through prayer, discipline, and the grace of the sacraments (cf. CCC 2518), the heart is purified and restored. A pure heart begins to see God not only in extraordinary moments, but in the quiet, ordinary rhythms of daily life.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, purifier of souls and light of every heart, we come before You with all that is divided within us. Cleanse our hearts from hidden selfishness, from disordered desires, and from all that prevents us from loving You fully. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, grant us the grace of simplicity and sincerity. Help us to act not for recognition, but for love of You alone. Guard our thoughts, guide our words, and purify our intentions in all that we do. When distractions pull us away, gently draw us back into Your presence. May our hearts become dwelling places for You, peaceful and undivided. O Jesus, create in us clean hearts, capable of seeing You in all things and loving You above all things. Let our lives reflect Your purity, and may we walk always in Your truth and grace. Amen.

Day 4 – Faithfulness in Small Things

Scripture Reading
“One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much.” (cf. Lk 16:10)

Reflection
St. Bernadette’s holiness was not marked by grand gestures, but by quiet fidelity in daily life. She fulfilled ordinary duties with patience, humility, and love. This reveals a central truth: holiness is formed in the small and hidden acts that often go unnoticed. Our Adorable Jesus is present in the ordinary moments of our lives—in our responsibilities, routines, and simple acts of service. When these are done with love, they become offerings pleasing to God. Bernadette teaches us that greatness lies in consistency, not in visibility. In our own lives, we are often tempted to seek extraordinary experiences, yet God invites us to sanctify the present moment. Each small act of kindness, honesty, and diligence becomes a step toward holiness. Through faithful perseverance, even the simplest duties are transformed into acts of love that glorify God.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, present in the hidden and ordinary moments of our lives, teach us to be faithful in all things, especially in what seems small and unnoticed. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, grant us the grace to embrace our daily responsibilities with love and dedication. Help us to see each task as an opportunity to serve You and to offer our lives back to You. When we grow weary or discouraged, remind us that nothing done in love is ever wasted. Give us perseverance in the little things, and hearts that seek to please You in all we do. Transform our routine into a path of holiness, and our efforts into acts of quiet worship. O Jesus, sanctify our daily lives and make them dwelling places of Your presence, where love is lived in simplicity and faithfulness. Amen.

Day 5 – Silence and Interior Life

Scripture Reading
“Be still, and know that I am God.” (cf. Ps 46:10)

Reflection
St. Bernadette’s silence was filled with a deep awareness of God’s presence. In her quietness, she learned to listen. Our Adorable Jesus often speaks not in noise, but in the stillness of the heart (cf. 1 Kgs 19:12). In today’s world, constant distractions can make it difficult to hear His voice. Yet silence is not emptiness—it is a space where love deepens. Bernadette teaches us that interior life is essential for true communion with God. When we withdraw from noise, even briefly, we create room for grace. Silence allows us to recognize God’s movements within us and to respond with greater clarity. In daily life, cultivating moments of stillness helps us remain rooted in truth. Through silence, the soul becomes attentive, receptive, and transformed by divine presence.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, hidden in silence and present within the depths of our souls, draw us away from the noise that distracts us from You. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, teach us to love stillness and to seek You in quiet moments. Calm the restlessness within us and help us to listen with open hearts. When we are overwhelmed by activity or distraction, gently call us back into Your presence. Let our hearts become places of peace where You may dwell and speak. Teach us to value silence not as emptiness, but as a sacred encounter with You. O Jesus, form within us a deep interior life rooted in love and attentiveness. May we carry Your peace into all we do, and remain united to You even in the midst of daily responsibilities. Amen.

Day 6 – Obedience to God’s Will

Scripture Reading
“Not my will, but yours be done.” (cf. Lk 22:42)

Reflection
St. Bernadette’s life was marked by obedience, even when it required sacrifice and misunderstanding. She trusted that God’s will, though sometimes difficult, was always guided by love. Our Adorable Jesus Himself lived perfect obedience to the Father, even unto the Cross (cf. Phil 2:8). Obedience is not merely submission, but a loving surrender rooted in trust (cf. CCC 144). It frees the soul from self-centered desires and aligns it with divine wisdom. Bernadette shows us that peace is found not in control, but in surrender. In our lives, obedience may take the form of doing what is right rather than what is easy, remaining faithful in responsibilities, or choosing truth over comfort. When we entrust ourselves to God’s will, we discover a deeper freedom—the freedom to love as Christ loves.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, obedient unto death and perfect in love, we place our wills before You with trust and humility. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, grant us the grace to follow You faithfully, even when the path is difficult. Help us to let go of our need for control and to trust in Your wisdom and guidance. When we are faced with choices, give us clarity to choose what is right, and courage to act upon it. Teach us to surrender our desires and to embrace Your will as a path of love and freedom. May our lives become continual “yeses” to You, offered with generosity and faith. O Jesus, shape our hearts according to Your own, that we may live not for ourselves, but for You who love us without measure. Amen.

Day 7 – Perseverance in Faith

Scripture Reading
“Let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us.” (cf. Heb 12:1)

Reflection
St. Bernadette remained steadfast in her faith despite doubt, opposition, and misunderstanding from others. She did not rely on feelings, but on trust in God. Our Adorable Jesus calls us to persevere, especially when faith is tested. True faith matures not in comfort, but in endurance. Like many biblical figures who remained faithful through trials, Bernadette teaches us that perseverance strengthens the soul. In our daily lives, we may face moments of doubt, discouragement, or pressure to compromise our beliefs. Yet these moments are opportunities to grow deeper in faith. By remaining rooted in prayer and truth, we learn to trust beyond what we see. Perseverance transforms faith into something enduring, capable of withstanding trials and bearing witness to God’s presence.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, source and strength of our faith, we turn to You in moments of weakness and uncertainty. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, grant us the grace to persevere when our faith is tested. When doubts arise or discouragement weighs upon us, remind us of Your constant presence and love. Help us to remain faithful not only in times of consolation, but also in times of trial. Strengthen our trust in You and deepen our commitment to follow You. Give us courage to stand firm in truth, even when it is difficult. O Jesus, sustain us with Your grace and lead us forward with hope. May our faith grow stronger through every challenge, and may our lives bear witness to Your enduring love and faithfulness. Amen.

Day 8 – Love for the Eucharist

Scripture Reading
“I am the bread of life.” (cf. Jn 6:35)

Reflection
St. Bernadette had a deep love for Jesus in the Eucharist, recognizing Him as truly present and given for our salvation. The Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life (cf. CCC 1324), where Our Adorable Jesus offers Himself to us completely. In this sacrament, Christ remains with us, nourishing our souls and strengthening our faith. Bernadette teaches us to approach the Eucharist with reverence, gratitude, and love. In a world that often forgets the sacred, we are invited to rediscover the profound gift of Christ’s presence. Each encounter with the Eucharist is an invitation into deeper communion with Him. Through attentive participation in Mass and moments of adoration, our hearts are gradually transformed. The Eucharist becomes not only a sacrament we receive, but a mystery we live.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, truly present in the Most Holy Eucharist, we come before You with reverence and love. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, deepen our faith in Your real presence and awaken in us a greater desire to receive You worthily. Help us to approach You with humility, gratitude, and devotion. When we are distracted or indifferent, draw our hearts back to the beauty of Your gift. Nourish our souls with Your grace and strengthen us to live according to Your will. May each encounter with You transform us and draw us closer to Your Heart. O Jesus, remain with us always, and teach us to remain with You. Let our lives become reflections of the love we receive from You in the Eucharist. Amen.

Day 9 – Total Surrender to God

Scripture Reading
“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” (cf. Lk 23:46)

Reflection
The life of St. Bernadette culminated in total surrender to God. She sought nothing for herself, but entrusted everything to divine providence. Our Adorable Jesus invites us into this same abandonment, where trust becomes complete. Surrender is not loss, but fulfillment, for in giving ourselves to God, we receive His peace. Like Christ in His final act of trust (cf. Lk 23:46), Bernadette lived in quiet confidence in the Father’s love. In our lives, surrender often requires letting go of control, fears, and personal expectations. It is a daily act of trust, renewed in both small and significant moments. When we surrender, we allow God to lead us according to His wisdom. In this offering of self, we discover true freedom and lasting peace.

Prayer
O Our Adorable Jesus, we place our lives entirely into Your hands with trust and love. Through the intercession of St. Bernadette, teach us the grace of complete surrender. Take our fears, our desires, our plans, and all that we hold onto, and transform them according to Your will. Help us to trust You in every moment, even when the path is uncertain. When we are tempted to hold back, give us courage to let go and to rely fully on Your love. May our lives become offerings, freely given and joyfully received by You. O Jesus, lead us where You desire, and form in us hearts that rest in Your will. Let Your peace dwell within us, and may we belong entirely to You, now and forever. Amen.
