Novena to St. Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Start Date: March 10
End Date: March 18
Feast Day: March 18

Patronage:

The Universal Church, fathers, workers and laborers, families, a happy death, the sick and dying, the unemployed, travelers and immigrants, carpenters, purity and chastity.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer (to be said each day):

Saint Joseph, we, your unworthy children, greet you. You are the faithful protector and intercessor of all who love and venerate you. You know that we have special confidence in you and that, after Jesus and Mary, we place all our hope of salvation in you, for you are especially powerful with God and will never abandon your faithful servants.

Therefore, we humbly invoke you and commend ourselves, with all who are dear to us and all that belongs to us, to your intercession. We beg of you, by your love for Jesus and Mary, not to abandon us during life and to assist us at the hour of our death.

Glorious Saint Joseph, spouse of the Immaculate Virgin, obtain for us pure, humble, and charitable minds, and perfect resignation to the divine Will. Be our guide, our father, and our model through life, that we may merit to die as you did in the arms of Jesus and Mary.

Loving Saint Joseph, faithful follower of Jesus Christ, we raise our hearts to you to implore your powerful intercession in obtaining from the Divine Heart of Jesus all the graces necessary for our spiritual and temporal welfare, particularly the grace of a happy death, and the special grace we now implore:

(Mention your request.)

Guardian of the Word Incarnate, we feel confident that your prayers on our behalf will be graciously heard before the throne of God. Amen.

Day 1: St. Joseph, Foster-Father of Jesus

Bible Verse: “When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.” — Matthew 1:24-25

Reflection:
St. Joseph obediently accepted God’s will, even when it disrupted his plans. His silent faith teaches us to trust God, even when we do not fully understand His ways.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for the privilege He gave you in choosing you to be the foster-father of His Divine Son. As a token of our gratitude for this great honor, obtain for us the grace of a deep and devoted love for Jesus Christ, our God and Savior. Help us to serve Him with the same self-sacrificing love and dedication that you showed during your time on earth. Through your intercession with Jesus, your foster-Son, may we reach the holiness God has destined for us and attain the salvation of our souls.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Day 2: St. Joseph, Most Chaste Spouse of Mary

Bible Verse: “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” — Matthew 1:20

Reflection:
St. Joseph’s love for Mary was pure, selfless, and faithful. He teaches us that true love is sacrificial and always seeks the good of the other.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for the privilege He gave you of being the virginal husband of Mary. As a token of our gratitude to God, obtain for us the grace to love Jesus with all our hearts, as you did, and to love Mary with the same tenderness and loyalty with which you cherished her.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Day 3: St. Joseph, Model of Virtue

Bible Verse: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” — Micah 6:8

Reflection:
St. Joseph lived a life of humility, faithfulness, and righteousness. His example encourages us to practice these virtues in our daily lives.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for making you His specially chosen one. As a token of our gratitude to God, obtain for us the grace to imitate your virtues so that we, too, may be pleasing to the Heart of God. Help us to give ourselves entirely to His service and to the fulfillment of His Holy Will so that one day we may reach heaven and be eternally united with Him, as you are.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Day 4: St. Joseph, Faithful Servant of God

Bible Verse: “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.” — Matthew 25:23

Reflection:
St. Joseph shows us that true greatness lies in humble service. May we learn to trust in God’s providence and serve Him with joy.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for the privilege He gave you of being His faithful servant. As a token of our gratitude, obtain for us the grace to be faithful servants of God, as you were. Help us to share in the perfect obedience of Jesus, who came not to do His own Will, but the Will of His Father. May we trust in God’s Providence, knowing that if we follow His Will, He will provide for all our needs, both spiritual and physical. Help us to remain calm in our trials, leaving it to our Lord to deliver us from them in His perfect time. Teach us to imitate your generosity, for there is no greater reward on earth than the joy and honor of being faithful servants of God.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Day 5: St. Joseph, Patron of the Church

Bible Verse: “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” — Matthew 16:18

Reflection:
As the guardian of the Holy Family, St. Joseph also protects the Church. We ask for his intercession in keeping the Church strong in faith and holiness.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for the privilege He gave you of being the Patron of the Church. As a token of our gratitude, obtain for us the grace to live always as worthy members of this Church so that, through it, we may attain salvation. Bless the priests, religious, and laity of the Catholic Church, that they may always grow in God’s love and faithfulness to His service. Protect the Church from the evils of our time and from the persecution of her enemies. Through your powerful intercession, may the Church successfully fulfill its mission in the world—to glorify God and bring salvation to souls!

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Day 6: St. Joseph, Head of the Holy Family

Bible Verse: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” — Joshua 24:15

Reflection:
St. Joseph created a home filled with love, faith, and peace. May we strive to make our families a reflection of the Holy Family.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for the privilege He gave you of living in the Holy Family and being its head. As a token of our gratitude, obtain God’s blessing upon our own families. May our homes be places where Jesus and Mary reign—a kingdom of peace, joy, and love.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Day 7: St. Joseph, Model of Workers

Bible Verse: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” — Colossians 3:23

Reflection:
Through his honest labor, St. Joseph teaches us the dignity of work. May we offer our daily efforts to God as an act of love.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for the privilege He gave you of working side by side with Jesus in the carpenter shop of Nazareth. As a token of our gratitude, obtain for us the grace to respect the dignity of labor and to remain content with the position in life that Divine Providence has assigned to us. Teach us to work for God and with God in a spirit of humility and prayer, as you did, so that we may offer our daily toil in union with the sacrifice of Jesus in the Mass, as reparation for our sins and for the reward of eternal life.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Day 8: St. Joseph, Comfort of the Afflicted

Bible Verse: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28

Reflection:
St. Joseph endured suffering with patience and trust in God. In our trials, may we turn to him for comfort and strength.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for the privilege He gave you of suffering for Jesus and Mary. As a token of our gratitude, obtain for us the grace to bear our sufferings patiently out of love for Jesus and Mary. May we unite our trials, labors, and disappointments with the sacrifice of Jesus in the Mass, and, like you, share in Mary’s spirit of sacrifice.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Day 9: St. Joseph, Patron of a Happy Death

Bible Verse: “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His faithful servants.” — Psalm 116:15

Reflection:
St. Joseph died in the presence of Jesus and Mary, showing us the beauty of a peaceful death in God’s grace.

Daily Prayer:
Saint Joseph, we thank God for the privilege He gave you of dying in the arms of Jesus and Mary. As a token of our gratitude, obtain for us the grace of a happy death. Help us to live each day in preparation for our final hour. May we, too, accept death with resignation to God’s Holy Will, and when our time comes, may we die as you did—in the arms of Jesus, strengthened by Holy Viaticum, and in the arms of Mary, with her rosary in our hands and her name on our lips.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Closing Prayer (to be said each day):

Remember, most pure spouse of Mary, ever Virgin, my loving protector, Saint Joseph, that no one ever had recourse to your protection or asked for your aid without obtaining relief. Confiding, therefore, in your goodness, I come before you and humbly implore you. Despise not my petitions, foster-father of the Redeemer, but graciously receive them. Amen.
