Novena to the Nativity of Our Lady

Start Date: August 30
End Date: September 7
Feast Day: September 8

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Opening Prayer (to be said each day):

O Blessed Virgin Mary, sweet Mother of our Adorable Jesus and our tender Mother too, we rejoice at the grace of your holy birth, which announced the dawn of salvation and the joy of heaven. You are the chosen Daughter of the Father, the pure Mother of the Son, and the beloved Spouse of the Holy Spirit.

Dearest Mother, we come to you with childlike trust, asking you to accompany us in this novena. Open our hearts to receive the graces your Son desires to give us through your intercession. Obtain for us purity of heart, patience in suffering, and fidelity in following our Adorable Jesus.

O holy Child of Joachim and Anne, shine your motherly light upon us. Protect us from every danger, strengthen us in every trial, and guide us always closer to the Heart of your Son, that we may live and die in His love and share your joy forever in heaven.

Amen.

Day 1 : Mary, the Dawn of Salvation

Scripture Reading
“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone” (cf. Isaiah 9:2).

Reflection
The birth of Mary is the gentle light of dawn before the radiant rising of the Sun of Justice. In her, the Eternal Father prepared a pure vessel, so that our Adorable Jesus could one day dwell among us. Her birth scatters despair and awakens hope, for she ushers in the age of redemption. As dawn precedes the day, Mary’s nativity precedes the saving mission of Christ. Let us rejoice, for in welcoming her, we welcome the beginning of God’s great design for our salvation.

Prayer
Heavenly Child, lovable Mary, the Eternal Father delights in your birth, for He beholds in your coming into this world creatures so graced and uplifted by you that you would become the worthy Mother of our Adorable Jesus.
May your birth give joy to our souls also, by obtaining for us from the heavenly Father the pardon of our sins, and an abiding sorrow for them.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…

Day 2 – Mary, Chosen from All Eternity

Scripture Reading
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you” (cf. Jeremiah 1:5).

Reflection
Mary is the masterpiece of God’s eternal plan, chosen before time to be the Mother of our Adorable Jesus. Her birth is not a mere event in history, but a revelation of divine election — the Father’s delight in raising up a woman through whom His Word would take flesh. In her, humanity is lifted into intimate communion with God. To celebrate her nativity is to awaken in ourselves the call to holiness: to be reborn, not of flesh, but of the Spirit, conformed to the likeness of Christ. Mary’s joy is that each of her children might live in union with her Son and share eternal glory.

Prayer
O Chosen One among the daughters of Adam, admirable Mary, the Son of God delights in your birth, for He beholds in you the one chosen to be His Mother — and oh! such a beloved Mother.
May your birth give joy to our souls also, by obtaining from your divine Son, our Adorable Jesus, the grace to be born again spiritually to a holy life, perfectly conformed to yours, so that we may merit to obtain eternal glory.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…
(State your intentions)

Day 3 – Mary, Source of the Immaculate Blood

Scripture Reading
“You were ransomed…with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot” (cf. 1 Peter 1:18–19).

Reflection
From Mary’s pure flesh, untouched by sin, the Eternal Word took His humanity, drawing from her veins the Precious Blood that would redeem the world. Her nativity is thus the hidden beginning of our ransom, for in her birth, the fountain of salvation is prepared. The Blood of our Adorable Jesus — poured out on Calvary and offered eternally in the Eucharist — is intimately linked to Mary’s own humanity. To rejoice in her coming into the world is to recognize that God, in His infinite wisdom, chose her to be the living source of the Blood that cleanses us. Her birth points us to the Cross, where that same Blood would open for us the gates of eternal happiness.

Prayer
O Chosen One among the daughters of Adam, lovable Mary, the Eternal Word takes delight in your birth, for He sees in you the source of His Immaculate Blood.
May your birth give joy to our souls also, by obtaining for us from the Word made Flesh — our Adorable Jesus — the grace to find in this Divine Blood the eternal happiness of our souls.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…
(State your intentions)

Day 4 – Mary, Co-Redemptress with Christ

Scripture Reading
“I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel” (cf. Genesis 3:15).

Reflection
From the dawn of creation, God promised a Redeemer who would crush the serpent’s head. In the mystery of Mary’s birth, that promise begins to flower, for the one destined to stand beside the Redeemer enters the world. She is not a rival to Him, but His perfect companion, offering her tears, her sorrows, and her fiat in union with His sacrifice. At the Cross, the Blood of our Adorable Jesus mingled with the sorrow of His Mother’s heart, forming a single offering of love for the salvation of the world. To celebrate her nativity is to recognize her unique role in redemption — a role that does not diminish Christ but magnifies His saving work. Her presence teaches us to unite our own sufferings to His, that nothing may be wasted in the mystery of salvation.

Prayer
O Chosen One among the daughters of Adam, admirable Mary, the Redeemer, promised to mankind from the beginning of the world, takes delight in your birth, for He sees in you the one destined to become the Co-Redemptress of souls by uniting your tears to the Blood shed on the Cross by our Adorable Jesus to save mankind.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…
(State your intentions)

Day 5 – Mary, Temple of the Holy Spirit

Scripture Reading
“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” (cf. 1 Corinthians 3:16).

Reflection
Mary’s birth brings into the world the soul uniquely prepared to be the living temple of the Holy Spirit. From her first breath, she was preserved from sin and filled with grace, never allowing any shadow to disturb His indwelling. The Spirit who hovered over creation and descended at Pentecost found in Mary His most perfect dwelling, where divine love burned without ceasing. In her, we glimpse what God intends for all humanity: to be purified, sanctified, and aflame with His presence. To celebrate her nativity is to be reminded that the same Spirit desires to make our souls temples of holiness, vessels of divine love, and witnesses of final perseverance. Through Mary, we ask the Spirit to conform us more and more to our Adorable Jesus.

Prayer
Resplendent Lily of Paradise, lovable Mary, the Holy Spirit takes delight in your birth, for He sees in you the soul never stained by sin, which would forever be His worthy Temple.
May your birth give joy to our souls also, by obtaining for us from the Holy Spirit His divine love and final perseverance in union with our Adorable Jesus.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…
(State your intentions)

Day 6 – Mary, Joy of Her Parents and Consolation of Souls

Scripture Reading
“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her” (cf. Proverbs 31:28).

Reflection
The birth of Mary was the long-awaited answer to the tears and prayers of St. Joachim and St. Anne. Their consolation at her coming reveals how God transforms human sorrow into joy when we trust in His timing. The child they embraced was not only their joy, but the hidden joy of the whole world — for through her would come our Adorable Jesus, the Desire of nations. Her nativity reminds us that God often works silently in hidden places, raising up His saints to console His people. In Mary, we learn true detachment: she possessed nothing of the world, yet became Mother of Him who made the world. Her birth consoles us still, teaching us to seek not fleeting comforts but the eternal consolation of living in God alone.

Prayer
Most Beautiful Branch of the tree of David, most admirable Mary, whose birth was such a consolation to St. Joachim and St. Anne, who rejoiced to be the parents of so holy a child, may your birth be the consolation of our souls, by obtaining for us from God victory over the world and detachment from all the things of this earth, so that we may live more fully for our Adorable Jesus.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…
(State your intentions)

Day 7 – Mary, Joy of the Angels and Terror of Demons

Scripture Reading
“Are they not all ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?” (cf. Hebrews 1:14).

Reflection
The angels rejoiced at Mary’s birth, for in her they beheld the one destined to bring forth our Adorable Jesus, who would reconcile heaven and earth. Where the pride of the fallen angels led to ruin, Mary’s humility opened the way to glory. She is the Morning Star, announcing the dawn of redemption, radiant with purity and obedience. The demons tremble at her name, for she is united inseparably to the victory of her Son. To honor her nativity is to strengthen our confidence in her maternal protection, especially in spiritual battles. She teaches us that victory is not in our strength, but in total union with Christ. Through her intercession, we are preserved from the snares of the evil one and destined to share forever in the joy of the angels.

Prayer
Resplendent Morning Star, lovable Mary, your birth was the cause of great joy to the angels, for they beheld in you the Mother of the Redeemer of the world, our Adorable Jesus, who by His Death would repair the loss sustained by the fall of the rebellious angels in paradise.
May your birth give joy to our souls also, by obtaining for us from God victory over the infernal enemy, deliverance from all his snares, and the grace to be associated in glory with the angels in heaven.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…
(State your intentions)

Day 8 – Mary, Aurora of the Sun of Justice

Scripture Reading
“But for you who fear my name, the Sun of Justice shall arise with healing in its wings” (cf. Malachi 4:2).

Reflection
The birth of Mary was like the first glow of dawn over a world still shadowed in darkness. To the souls waiting in limbo, her coming was a herald of hope, for soon the true Sun — our Adorable Jesus — would rise and shatter the night of sin and death. In her nativity, heaven and earth are drawn closer, for God’s plan of salvation begins to shine more visibly. She teaches us that patience in waiting and trust in God’s promise never go unrewarded. Her light was gentle but sure, announcing the day of redemption that would follow. To honor her birth is to open our hearts to the dawn of grace and to embrace the will of God with constancy, even amid trials, knowing that through her, Christ’s light will always prevail.

Prayer
Brilliant Aurora of Heaven, lovable Mary, your birth brought great consolation to the souls of the saints detained in limbo, for it announced the approach of the Sun of Justice, our Adorable Jesus, who would enlighten their darkness and then conduct them to paradise.
May your birth give joy to our souls also, and obtain for us from God patience in all adversities, and a perfect and constant conformity to His most holy will.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…
(State your intentions)

DAY 9 Mary, Mediatrix of All Graces

Scripture Reading
“From His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace” (cf. John 1:16).

Reflection
Mary’s birth brought joy not only to her parents, nor even only to Israel, but to the entire human family. From her would come our Adorable Jesus, the Author of all grace and salvation. In her, humanity received its perfect Mediatrix, for she distributes to her children what Christ has merited, never keeping anything for herself but always leading souls to Him. Her nativity completes the chain of hope from Adam until Christ, for in her the story of redemption reaches its most tender turning point. To honor her birth is to renew our trust in her motherly intercession, confident that she dispenses every grace needed for eternal salvation. She is our sure refuge in weakness, our guide in trials, and our gentle path to Jesus.

Prayer
Mediatrix between God and mankind, admirable Mary, by your birth you perfected the joy of all the children of Adam, who through you have received the Author of Grace, our Adorable Jesus, for He has made you the treasurer of all the graces which are imparted to us.
May your birth be a special cause of joy to our souls by obtaining for us from God eternal salvation and all the graces necessary to obtain it.
Dearest Mother, please pray for us and for these our intentions…
(State your intentions)

Closing Prayer (to be said each day):
