REFINED IN HIS LIGHT

Encounter the Real Presence of Jesus

Mass Reading Reflection – Divine Appeals

Sunday, Feast of the Presentation of the Lord

The Presentation of the Lord, as described in Luke 2:22-40, is a moment of profound fulfillment of the Law and prophetic revelation. With regard to the Mosaic law, Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple. Simeon, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, identifies the Child as the long-awaited Messiah, the “light for revelation to the Gentiles” (2:32). His prophecy reiterates two aspects of Jesus’ mission: He is light and glory, yet a cause of suffering to many, for He would be the means of the falling and rising of many. In this momentous turning point of salvation history, we realize that great change has come upon the world through Jesus, and the wonder also reminds us that holiness is often a mixture of joy and sorrow, for here we are invited to walk in the light of our Lord Jesus..

The prophet Malachi 3:1–4 foretells the coming of the Lord, who would purify His people, reinforcing this idea of purity. The Lord will purify His people’s hearts like a refiner’s fire. God will be able to shape His people into greater harmony with His holiness through a process of refinement rather than condemnation. For the priests and consecrated souls, this prophetic passage holds deep significance. They are not only called to be instruments of purification but are also required to submit themselves to the refining fire of God’s love, continually seeking greater holiness and spiritual integrity. This call is not limited to the clergy but extends to all who follow our Adorable Jesus, urging us to allow His refining grace to transform our hearts and lives.

In Hebrews 2:14-18, we are reminded of the compassion of our Adorable Jesus. By becoming fully human, He experienced the fullness of human suffering and temptation. Through His humanity, He became the perfect High Priest, able to sympathize with our weaknesses. This passage invites priests and consecrated souls to understand that Jesus, who walked the path of suffering, is intimately aware of their struggles and is there to support them. His sacrifice not only offers salvation but also provides strength for His followers to endure their own trials with hope and faith in God’s providence. All Christians, lay or consecrated, are invited to unite their own struggles with the suffering of our Adorable Jesus, finding in His compassion the strength to persevere.

The Divine Appeal to priests and consecrated souls, particularly in Jesus’ Divine Appeal 118, echoes these themes of purification and holiness. In this appeal, Jesus expresses His deep longing for the perfection of those who are consecrated to Him, saying: “Many among the consecrated souls do not understand My feelings. They treat Me as one unknown to them. I like them to know how much I desire perfection.” This call is not so much a harsh condemnation but a plea from the heart of Jesus, deserving of love, to live in deeper communion with Him and accept the purifying process that leads to holiness. The Divine Call invites priests and consecrated people to shape their lives in the mission of Jesus, as His true witnesses , bringing forth His light into an area weighed down by His love and salvation.

The readings and Divine Appeal invite all Christians, both priests and lay faithful, to reflect on the call to holiness and purification that is central to our faith. Each of us is reminded that there is a call to be a reflection of Christ’s light, projecting His love and truth in this world of darkness. Whether through the purifying fire of suffering, the merciful embrace of our Adorable Jesus, or the daily effort to grow toward perfection, in this purification of God, all Christians are called to lay claim to it in their lives. This call is not limited to consecrated souls but extends to all the baptized, urging us to grow in holiness, live with integrity, and share in the mission of Jesus. In response to the Divine Appeal, we are encouraged to approach our daily lives with greater commitment to prayer, service, and sacrifice, recognizing that, like our Adorable Jesus, we are all called to be light for the world and instruments of God’s mercy.

Prayer

Adorable Jesus, we praise You for Your light and glory, revealed in the Presentation. Purify our hearts through Your love and grace. May we embrace Your compassion in our struggles, and live faithfully in Your service, reflecting Your holiness to the world. Strengthen us, O Lord.
