Monday , Sixth week in Ordinary Time, Year I

First Reading – Genesis 4:1-15, 25

Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 1:1-2.3.4 and 6 (R. Psalm 50:1, 8.16bc–17.20-21

Gospel – Matthew 5:21-24

An example of how great the capacity for sin can be when allowed to rampage through a soul is the account of Cain and Abel, which is the theme of the first reading from Genesis 4:1-15, 25. Cain killed his brother because God appreciated Abel’s gift more than his. God told Cain, “Sin is lying in wait at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it,” showing how each one of us must fight that internal battle. A little seed of anger or jealousy can sometimes germinate as sin, and if it is allowed to spread, indeed it destroys our relationship with God and with one another. However, God’s response also demonstrates His mercy. Cain receives a punishment for his sin , a far-reaching exile, but God marks him with a sign to protect him from harm. In this way, God shows us that even sinners remain in His care.

In the Gospel, Jesus, our Adorable One, often encourages His disciples to embrace forgiveness and defeat anger; it is He Who teaches that anger against a brother is already murder in the heart, and therefore, sin is not only an external activity; it takes birth in our hearts, in thoughts, desires, and intentions. True worship is therefore never separated from reconciliation with one’s brother, and our Adorable Jesus insists on this reconciliation with others before presenting our gifts at the altar. This teaching captures the lesson Cain and Abel learned-that God desires hearts devoid of all malice, where love and unity reign rather than division and bitterness.

Our Adorable Jesus continues to call souls to conversion and renewal within themselves. He bids them to renounce sin and offer their hearts to Him, along with sincerity and humility. He is ever ready to forgive and heal the wounds inflicted by our failings, yet He demands that we, in turn, become His co-workers in the task of saving souls. The mercy that God extended to Cain is now offered by our Adorable Jesus to every soul, no matter how far it may have strayed. He longs for our return and rejoices over our offering of the heart to Him in love and confidence.
As we learn, we must reflect on ourselves in the mirror . Have we hoarded anger, selfishness, or unforgiveness ? Are we guilty of completely ignoring the call for reconciliation from all whom we have negatively affected? Jesus wants us to come first with clean hearts and confessions to be restored by His merciful grace and to become peacemakers within our families, communities, and parishes; understanding instead of judgment, and forgiveness instead of resentment.

Every day, let’s make the decision to conquer sin, live in the light of God’s love, and rely on the unwavering mercy of our adorable Jesus. That mercy is found in Adorable Jesus, who is always inviting us to forsake hatred and embrace love. May we offer to the altar, as expiation for our sins, a reconciled heart that reflects the mercy and peace of the One who loved us first (cf. 1 Jn 4:19). Let us make the daily decision to overcome sin, live in the light of God’s love, and rely on the unwavering mercy of our Adorable Jesus.

Prayer

Oh our Adorable Jesus, You know the struggles within our hearts. When sin lurks at the door, give us the grace to master it. Heal our wounds of envy, anger, and pride. Fill us with Your mercy and love, that we may walk in peace with You. Amen.
